The Ultimate Commercial Restroom Cleaning Checklist (Daily, Weekly, Monthly)

The Ultimate Commercial Restroom Cleaning Checklist (Daily, Weekly, Monthly)

Your commercial restroom is the single most important, and most dangerous, room in your building.

It can be your greatest asset or your biggest liability. A clean, bright, well-stocked restroom tells your customers, employees, and guests that you are professional, competent, and that you care about their health and safety.

A dirty, smelly, or poorly-stocked restroom does the opposite. It screams incompetence. It’s a breeding ground for germs and bacteria, a source of customer complaints, and the fastest way to permanently damage your reputation.

But a truly “clean” restroom doesn’t happen by accident. It’s not about “wiping things down” when they look dirty. A professional, sanitary restroom is the result of a system. It’s a schedule of daily, weekly, and deep-cleaning tasks that, when performed consistently, guarantee a spotless, safe, and welcoming environment.

This is that system.

We’ve compiled the ultimate commercial restroom cleaning checklist, broken down by frequency. Use this as a training tool for your staff, a log sheet for quality control, and a guide to ensure you’re using the right bulk cleaning supplies for the right job.

The Pre-Clean: Your “Toolbox for Success”

Before you begin, you must have the right tools. A cleaner can’t do a professional job with a residential-grade sponge and an old spray bottle. Proper cleaning requires the right bulk janitorial supplies to protect your staff and do the job efficiently.

Your Essential Supply Cart:

  • [ ] Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Heavy-duty rubber gloves and safety goggles are non-negotiable.
  • [ ] Caddy with Cleaning Chemicals:
  • [ ] Disinfectant: An EPA-registered, hospital-grade bulk disinfectant (like Clorox Clean-Up Disinfectant) to kill germs.
  • [ ] Restroom Cleaner: A dedicated restroom cleaner or bowl cleaner (like Cling Bowl Cleaner) for toilets and urinals.
  • [ ] Glass Cleaner: A streak-free formula.
  • [ ] Neutral Floor Cleaner: For mopping.
  • [ ] Tools:
  • [ ] Color-coded microfiber cloths (e.g., Red/Pink for Restrooms to prevent cross-contamination). Use one color for toilets, another for sinks.
  • [ ] Toilet bowl brush and holder.
  • [ ] Scrubber pads.
  • [ ] Putty knife (for “stuck-on” gum or grime).
  • [ ] Restocking Supplies:
  • [ ] Bulk Toilet Tissue (Jumbo rolls or standard).
  • [ ] Bulk Paper Towels (Hardwound rolls or multi-fold).
  • [ ] Bulk Hand Soap (Liquid or foam refills).
  • [ ] Bulk Trash Liners.
  • [ ] Urinal Screens (as needed).
  • [ ] Hand Sanitizer refills (if applicable).
  • [ ] Floor Care:
  • [ ] “Wet Floor” signs.
  • [ ] Broom and dustpan.
  • [ ] Mop bucket with wringer and a clean mop head.

The Daily Cleaning Checklist (High-Traffic: 2-3x Day / Low-Traffic: 1x Day)

These are the non-negotiable, high-visibility tasks that must be done every single day to maintain a baseline of cleanliness and safety.

Step 1: The “Sweep & Stock” (1-2 minutes)

  • [ ] Place “Wet Floor” signs at the entrance.
  • [ ] Do a visual “sweep” of the room. Pick up any large trash (paper towels, etc.) from the floor.
  • [ ] Check every dispenser. This is the #1 priority. A user will forgive a lot, but they will never forgive an empty dispenser.
  • [ ] Bulk Toilet Tissue: Restock all stalls.
  • [ ] Bulk Paper Towels: Restock all dispensers.
  • [ ] Bulk Hand Soap: Refill all dispensers.
  • [ ] Toilet Seat Covers: Refill dispensers (if used).
  • [ ] Empty all trash receptacles (including sanitary napkin disposal units).
  • [D] Replace with fresh bulk trash liners.

Step 2: The “Surface & Shine” (5-7 minutes)

  • [ ] Spray all high-touch surfaces with disinfectant. This includes:
  • [ ] Stall door handles (inside and out).
  • [ ] Main door handles (push plates).
  • [ ] Light switches.
  • [ ] Paper towel and soap dispenser levers/buttons.
  • [ ] Baby changing station.
  • [ ] Clean and polish mirrors with glass cleaner.
  • [ ] Clean sinks and countertops. Use your disinfectant or all-purpose cleaner to remove all water spots, soap scum, and toothpaste.
  • [ ] Wipe down and polish all chrome fixtures (faucets, dispenser faces).

Step 3: The “Toilets & Urinals” (3-5 minutes per stall)

  • [ ] Apply restroom cleaner or bowl cleaner to the inside of the toilet bowl/urinal. Let it “dwell” (sit) for a few minutes to do its work.
  • [ ] While it dwells, use your disinfectant spray and a dedicated (Red) cloth to clean all exterior surfaces, starting from the cleanest and moving to the dirtiest:
  • [ ] Top of the tank.
  • [ ] Flush handle.
  • [ ] Top of the toilet seat.
  • [ ] Bottom of the toilet seat.
  • [ ] The rim and exterior of the bowl, all the way down to the base.
  • [ ] Scrub the inside of the bowl/urinal with the toilet brush.
  • [ ] Flush to rinse.

Step 4: The “Floor & Final” (5 minutes)

  • [ ] Sweep the entire floor to remove dust, hair, and debris.
  • [ ] Prepare your mop bucket with neutral floor cleaner and hot water.
  • [ ] Mop the entire floor, starting at the furthest corner and working your way back to the door.
  • [ ] Pay special attention to the floor areas around toilets and urinals.
  • [ ] Remove “Wet Floor” signs only after the floor is 100% dry.
  • [ ] Do one final visual scan and smell test.

The Weekly Cleaning Checklist (1x Week)

These are deeper-cleaning tasks that prevent build-up and tackle the areas that daily cleaning misses.

  • [ ] Deep-Scrub Surfaces:
    • [ ] Use a grout brush or scrubber pad to clean all tile grout lines on countertops and backsplashes.
    • [ ] Remove and clean all drain caps/strainers in sinks.
    • [ ] Walls & Stalls:
    • [ ] Use a disinfectant or all-purpose cleaner to wipe down all stall partitions, from top to bottom. Pay attention to corners and hardware.
    • [ ] Spot-clean all walls to remove any splashes, scuffs, or marks.
    • [ ] Dust all high surfaces: tops of mirrors, partition bracing, and light fixtures.
  • [ ] Toilets & Urinals:
    • [ ] Use a scale/lime remover (if needed) inside bowls to remove any hard water rings.
    • [ ] Replace urinal screens and/or deodorizer blocks.
    • [ ] Hardware:
    • [ ] Dust all air vents and exhaust fan covers.
    • [ ] Polish all brightwork, including door kickplates and plumbing.

The Monthly Deep-Clean Checklist (1x Month)

This is the “restorative” clean. These tasks prevent long-term, expensive problems and bring the restroom back to a “like new” state.

  • [ ] Walls & Floors:
    • [ ] Wash all walls and ceilings, from top to bottom, with a long-handled tool and a gentle cleaner.
    • [ ] Deep-Clean Grout: Use a heavy-duty grout cleaner and a machine or stiff brush to scrub all floor grout lines. This is a critical task to prevent permanent staining and odors.
  • [ ] Fixtures:
    • [ ] Take apart faucet aerators and soak them in a descaling solution to remove mineral build-up and improve water pressure.
    • [ ] Scrub all floor drains.
    • [ ] Wash the inside of all light fixtures.
  • [ ] Floor Care:
    • [ ] This is the time to do a “scrub and recoat” on your floor finish if you have VCT or tile. Use a floor pad (like a blue or red pad) to deep-clean the finish and prepare it for a new, fresh coat. This prevents the need for a full, costly “strip and wax.”

The Key to Success: Consistency and the Right Supplies

This checklist may look intimidating, but when it becomes a routine, it’s a fast, efficient system. A consistent cleaning program is always cheaper and easier than a “rescue” clean to fix a neglected, hazardous restroom.

The system only works if your team is empowered with the right tools. Running out of bulk paper towels or using the wrong disinfectant can break the entire chain of safety and cleanliness.

A well-stocked supply closet is the foundation of a clean facility. Partner with a supplier who understands your needs, can provide all these products in cost-effective bulk, and can ensure you never run out of the essentials.
